Selank was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences by modifying the natural immune peptide tuftsin with a stabilizing Pro-Gly-Pro tail.

Selank is a lab-designed peptide that scientists created by taking a small immune-system peptide called tuftsin (which your spleen naturally makes) and adding a stabilizing tail to it. Think of it like taking a naturally short-lived molecule and giving it a protective coat so it lasts longer in the body. Researchers study it because the resulting peptide appears to influence both immune function and brain chemistry.
Selank is hypothesized to modulate the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and influence serotonergic and GABAergic neurotransmission. The Pro-Gly-Pro tail is thought to slow enzymatic degradation while also contributing its own biological activity through effects on cytokine expression.
Selank has been studied in human clinical settings in Russia and has been approved as an intranasal medication in the Russian Federation. Published human studies have examined its effects on anxiety, cognitive performance, and gene expression of neurotrophins.
Animal models have been used extensively to study Selank's effects on anxiety-like behavior, memory, and immune function in rodents.
In vitro research has characterized its effects on gene expression, particularly BDNF and IL-6, and its interactions with enkephalin-degrading enzymes.
Selank has been approved as an intranasal medication in the Russian Federation. It is not approved by the FDA or EMA and is classified as a research peptide (RUO) outside of Russia.
The Pro-Gly-Pro modification gives Selank enhanced stability compared to native tuftsin. Intranasal formulations are the most studied delivery route.
